![]() ![]() Vinland Saga’s Askeladd wasn’t designed as a character deserving of sympathy. , Askeladd was based on an existing character, his prototype being a figure from Norwegian folklore named Askeladden. Even after Askeladd's death, which shook Thorfinn to his core and inspired his future metamorphosis into a pacifist, the Viking continues to appear in Thorfinn's dreams and haunt him in visions. While Askeladd is introduced as Thorfinn's enemy, he ends up having a contradictory effect on the protagonist. Still an incredibly popular character due to her excellent writing and dangerous charm, Makima caused way too much emotional damage to fans for them to forgive her. Makima might describe herself as a “necessary evil,” yet seeing her objectives as noble does little to tame the hate many fans feel towards her. Not only did the Control Devil manipulate the entirety of Public Safety to reach her goal of obtaining Pochita’s heart, but she also irreversibly scarred Denji, someone she never even saw as human, by killing his two best friends in the worst possible way. Unlike her predecessor, she doesn't seem to be villainous.įor all of her allure that managed to charm both the Chainsaw Man’s protagonist and most of the series’ fans, Makima is as loathsome as anime antagonists come. Popularity polls organized by Shonen Jump, coming behind Power in the first and Aki in the second.ĭespite being defeated at the end of Part 1, Makima's successor, the new Control Devil, was reborn as Nayuta, a major character of the new part and Denji's adoptive little sister. ![]() The actions of these abhorrent villains are almost impossible to justify, yet their abominable nature is exactly what makes them incredible characters. A truly outstanding hateable antagonist needs to strike an intricate balance between vileness and realism, and shockingly few anime antagonists actually manage to be realistically loathsome. From obnoxious sidekicks, like My Hero Academia’s Mineta, who never seem to grow out of their flaws, to the self-insert protagonist, like Sword Art Online’s Kirito, whose magnificence is exaggerated to the point of obnoxiousness, there’s no shortage of heroes hated by fans despite the author’s intentions to make them admirable.Īnd while such raw emotion as genuine hatred is surprisingly easy to stumble into accidentally, it’s much more challenging to create a character who purposefully triggers disdain in the audience.
